Activity Report 2019-22

For the past 15 months, the Ukrainian Media Fund (UMF) has delivered substantial aid to Ukrainian journalists and publishers to help them continue to perform their vital mission under extremely difficult conditions caused by the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Founded by the Nordic media associations, Bonnier News and the Gazeta Wyborcza Foundation in March 2022, the UMF is dedicated to directly supporting journalists and publishers in the war zone. 

On March 3, representatives of Gazeta Wyborcza Foundation’s Ukrainian Media Fund traveled to Lviv and Truskavets to deliver powerbanks and special batteries capable of supplying an entire editorial office with electricity. The equipment will be handed out to journalists working on the front lines.

The 2022 Golden Pen of Freedom, the annual press freedom award of the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), has been awarded to the Gazeta Wyborcza Foundation for its support of independent media and aid to Ukrainian journalist in the time of Russian invasion.

In the face of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the spread of disinformation by the occupant, the Gazeta Wyborcza Foundation and its partners established a Fund for Ukraine dedicated to direct support of journalists and publishers in the war zone.

We support the free media in guarding the rule of law.

The award commemorates one of the most outstanding Polish photojournalists. A man who documented the reality, the changing world, the most important conflicts in the world. It showed the hell of war and the hardships of everyday life. He was also an excellent observer of Poland in the era of transformation.

Meeting the concerns about the growing polarization and xenophobic moods in Europe, the Gazeta Wyborcza Foundation joins forces with the Center for Civic Education in the project "Re: memory - multimedia local stories" about the history of the 20th century.
